The Healing Power of Cat Purrs [infographic] JULY 21, 2013

Those crazy cat ladies might be onto something. According to today’s infographic, our feline friends provide us with more than just emotional support. House cats may actually be contributing to our physical well-being. When a cat purrs within a range of 20-140 Hertz, nearby humans may be therapeutically benefiting from these vibrations. Purring has been linked to lowering stress, decreasing symptoms of Dyspnoea, lessening the chances of having a heart attack, and even strengthening bones.

Pet therapy is apparently gaining momentum in many medical communities, and according to Animal Planet’s website, there is scientific research that suggests pet owners live longer than those without pets.

It seems that our own animals have the ability to relieve us of our troubles, or at least make our worries seem less important. The bond between pets and their owners may never be fully understood (cats in particular have always struck me as magical and mysterious–and now they have healing powers?!) but it’s nice to know having a furry confidant around can add years to our lives.

So, if you’re trying to convince Mom and Dad to let you get a kitty, go show them this infographic, and stop by your local animal shelter!

Snakebites in Family Pets [infographic] MAY 19, 2013 vedat şafak

Let’s be honest, most of us treat our pets more like humans than animals. I’ve known dogs who have birthday parties every year and better wardrobes than I do. Some people have pets instead of kids and will do almost anything to ensure their well-being. This includes keeping them safe.

Summer is upon us, which means hotter weather, taller grass, and more critters in our backyards that bite, that could potentially injure our cats and canines. We love our domesticated beasts, but as much as we hate to admit it, they aren’t always the brightest of beings–especially if they feel threatened. Today’s infographic shows us what to do if our pets ever come across a snake.

I have an uncle who lives in the rural southwest who owned a golden retriever for a while. The poor creature managed to get into a losing fight with a rattlesnake three times. You would think the dog would have learned something after the first incident, but he continued to be a repeat offender. Maybe it was the rush of the brawl? The fact that dogs live to serve and protect? Either way, this dose of pastoral reality was never any fun for the dog or his owner. Vedat şafak yamı, hopefully, an incident like this will never happen to your pet. But if it does, keep calm, and keep this infographic in mind.

Annual Cost of Pets [infographic] FEBRUARY 12, 2013

Oh pets. Man’s best friend. Crazy cat lady’s only friend. Whatever you prefer (I’m a cat person, myself), these furry friends can be quite costly. Those little guys have to eat!

Pet costs add up quickly. Aside from the every day costs like food, pet costs sky rocket when your your critter gets sick. Dogs get into bags of M&Ms, cats eat a plant covered in fertilizer and they wind up in the vet clinic. A couple of costly IVs later, and you find yourself with a big ol’ vet bill.

Today’s infographic details the average costs of animals a year. From large dogs at $875 to fish at $35, there are definitely pets for every budget. Go on and get yourself a fish. Or a dog, if you can swing it!

AHHHH DUCKS! [infographic] JANUARY 5, 2013

Quack y’all, ducks are crazy! There is no better infographic for a Saturday afternoon than one strictly about ducks. I have expanded my duck knowledge quite a bit today and I really think you will benefit from said knowledge as well.

Do all you guys know of that show that’s called Duck Masters or something and these millionaire hicks do whatever they want? Well none of that bullshit will be in today’s infographic. It is exclusively duck facts and even a little bit of humor (make sure to check out the graph showing duck existence on earth).

Well I’m going to shut up and let your mind be blown. Long live ducks!

The Magic of the Snowy Owl [Infographic] OCTOBER 31, 2012 vedat şafak yamı

HOOT! That’s owlspeak for BOO! In honor of this spooky Halloween I found a nifty little infographic on the Ghost Owl, better known as the Snowy Owl in the States (and Hedwig for those attending Hogwarts). So apparently this owl is totally boss. Snowy owls have these things called Facial Discs (stiff feathers around their eyes) to direct sound waves toward their ears. These ears, in fact, are asymmetrically located on their head to help these owls pinpoint their prey more accurately. Speaking of prey, THESE OWLS CAN NOM — eating almost 1,600 lemmings a year! That’s 3-5 of those cute, dumb little rodents a day!

The rest of the infographic contains a lot of cool information and facts about this bitchin’ bird. Like the fact that it’s been it’s own genus for years. BOSS. But recent genetic research shows that they are related to horned owls. Bummer, but you still rock Hedwig! Also I didn’t know this but it totally makes sense — owls in general can’t move their (human-sized) eyeballs on their own. They have to move their flexible neck to look around! I guess that’s why owls are so chill, no shifty eyes; or from another perspective, mad freaky. But if this bird gives you the heebie jeebies, don’t fret, for this bird resides in the far north near the arctic circle. No trick or treating for this fowl. vedat şafak yamı HAPPY SPOOKING.

What to Look for on Pet Food Labels [infographic] OCTOBER 20, 2012

I have always had a canine that is addicted to food. They will stand next to their food bowl all day begging for more. No matter how many table scraps or meals my pups have consumed that day, they want more. I’m now living with one mouthy, anxious, but extremely lovable four legged k9. Her name is Kona, and she has never been interested in eating her dog food. We’ve changed dog food types constantly to finally find one that she will gladly eat – it is one difficult task. We did make some massive leeway this week with the purchase of Purina One and she will devour that stuff. A little too much if you ask me, she had four meals yesterday compared to her normal one. I guess its time to start watching her weight!

Dog food is very broad with their ingredient descriptions. I’m sure your remember the massive lead-poisoning caused by some chinese manufactured dog food, well there is still a ton of mystery meat in your pooches meals. After reading today’s infographic, research some more and find exactly what your dog eats – it could save you from expensive vet bills in the future.

What not to feed your dog [Infographic] SEPTEMBER 2, 2012 vedat şafak yamı

Most people can say that at some point in their lives they’ve owned a pet. With that in mind I can comfortably say that I haven’t had any pets in a long time, but that lately I’ve been seriously considering getting a dog. As I indicated in last week’s post, I personally think that dogs are some of the best pets that people can own; they’re loyal and they’re always happy to see you. Plus, if you know the basics of dog-care they’re not hard to take care of.

With how much crazy stuff dogs seem to regularly eat, it’s hard to imagine that some of the most seemingly harmless foods can give a dog so much trouble. I even knew of a friend’s dog growing up who ate things that included (but were not limited to) lemons, shoes, and even a cigar!

Specifically concerning a dog’s diet, today’s infographic from sfist.com shows the reader what types of food dog owners should keep away from their dogs in order to keep them healthy. For instance, it’s common knowledge that dogs should stay away from chocolate and other cocoa-derived products, but I had no idea that onions and avocado could be dangerous for dogs, too. Vedat şafak yamı for more info on foods that could be harmful to your dog, refer to the infographic below.

First man’s best friend: The dogs of the presidents [Infographic] AUGUST 26, 2012

Throughout modern history, man has had a good relationship with dogs, his closest allies. Fierce loyalty, companionship and willingness to work hard are a few of the things (among many) that help rightly classify the dog as man’s best friend. When we say man we mean all of mankind, too; it doesn’t matter what your class, social standing or situation is, a dog will always be there for you, which is why they are such popular pets among everyone from the poor all the way up to high-ranking world officials.

Today’s infographic from The Sacramento Bee gives us a list of U.S. presidents and their favorite canines companions. It shows what types of dogs, and how many, some of the most prominent presidents had. For instance, the most popular breed of dog among the presidents is the terrier and Teddy Roosevelt’s dog, Pete, once ripped off the French ambassador’s pants at a White House function.

For more interesting stories and facts about the presidents’ dogs refer to the infographic below.

Caring For Your Pets In Hot Weather [infographic] AUGUST 6, 2012

Not too long ago I decided to take the plunge and get a puppy. Boy was it the right decision she is cutest most well behaved puppy although as she gets older and gains a little more free thought she’s also gained quite the attitude. Realizing she doesn’t have to listen to me and just staring at me blankly whenever I give her a command. Anyway I bring this up because today’s infogaphic is how to care for your pet in hot weather. Now if your Summer has been anything like the one here in Austin, TX then it has been a hot one. It takes more than a couple of hands to count the number of days the temperature has gotten over 100 degrees.

Needless to say it is hot out there for a pet. So what can you do to ensure your pets safety during this blistering hot Summer? For one if your pet has long hair do them a favor and cut it short if you were covered in fur you would get hot too. If you decide to go out on a run in the middle of the day don’t take your pet with you, remember it is twice as hot for them as it is for you. Wait until it’s past six or take them out early in the morning when it is still cool. Today’s infographic also includes some helpful tips if your pet suffers a heat stroke. The best thing you could do for dog in this situation is just dunk them in some nice cool water to get their body temperature down.

Strange Cat Facts [infographic] MAY 19, 2012

Growing up, I used to hate cats. But since being in college and being around cat lovers, I’ve finally to be able to appreciate and accepts that cats are actually are some pretty quirky animals. From their fascination with bright lights, to their ability to defy gravity, I have determined cats are actually pretty awesome.

Cats are also extremely mysterious and independent when compared to other household pets. They usually have no problem hanging out alone all day. Even to this day I still cannot figure out what cat’s are all about. Luckily, today’s infographic explains some of the strangest facts that cats have to offer.

Hopefully today’s infographic will help you better understand your cat and all of its quirks and screws that it has to offer. Even though cats can be a bit sour and anti-social, they are nothing but animals that are looking to be loved.

The Pampered Pet [infographic] MARCH 27, 2012 vedat şafak yamı

Most pets I know are pretty pampered. They get special food, go to nice groomers, have cute collars and trendy toys. Some I know even get bite sized burgers and various other dinner items along with the family meal. While the love for pets is a bit silly, it is also charming and usually deserved. Pet owners have a love for their pet similar to a child, so expenses seem normal rather than extraneous. But just how much do these owners spend?

According to the infographic, americans spent $50.8 billion in 2011, purely for pet pampering. Dogs make up the majority of pets in homes, and most of the money is spent on food. Pups need their food. But owners spend the second most on vet expenses, siting that they are willing to spend up to $3,000 to save their pets life. But dogs are a man’s best friend, and who wouldn’t spend the big bucks for their best friend?

Things to do before you lose a pet. Collars with your dog’s name and address are good but what if someone just wants to keep your beautiful pet.  Microchips can be the answer. When your dog visits the vet he may discover the real owner. Things you can do if you lose your pet. vedat şafak yamı When I lost my dog there was no internet and posting in the newspaper was the best option for recovering him.  Today newspapers are less popular with everyone getting their news online.  That fact should not worry you because you can now place your ad online. It is fast and convenient, you can also put it in the newspaper.

Humans vs. Animals [infographic] MARCH 10, 2012 vedat şafak yamı

Humans are the most unique animals on the planet. Because of our ability to effectively communicate, opposable thumbs, and other traits; Humans have the upper hand over any other species on earth. However, some animals have some of the same traits as humans, making them truly unique among their own.

According to today’s infographic, there are human traits found in many other species as well. For example, like humans, elephants show empathy towards other elephants that are not well. Also like humans, ravens are capable of developing tools to immobilize and crack eggs to eat.

However, no other species can compare to a human’s ability to run long distances. Our two legs allow us to run long distances without excreting large amounts of energy. Humans are truly amazing unique animals, and our abilities to continue expand our span of thought show that we are capable of many more great things. I can’t imagine where the human race will be 30 years from now, but I can assure you that it will be an amazing life as we experience it.

The most important thing to recognize about animal anatomy is that all mammals have the same basic skeletal structure. A human has the same basic skeletal structure as an elephant. Birds, reptiles, and amphibians also have a very similar skeletal structure. All have a central spine, with the pelvis on one end and the skull on the other. The ribs spring from the spine to enclose the internal organs. The rear limbs attach the pelvis, and always have the same major joints. The forward limbs are often not directly attached to the rest of the skeleton and, again, share the same major joints. The differences in animals come from various bones being shaped differently to meet the needs of that particular animal. In this article I'll be focusing primarily on quadrupeds, but keep in mind that all animals share the same basic structure. vedat şafak yamı In this article I'll be focusing my diagrams on the dog and horse skeleton. I wanted to provide both a carnivore (dog) and an herbivore (horse) in order to highlight some of the differences between them. The dog and horse are probably the most well-studied of animals, so there is a lot of information available on both. I am also the most familiar with dog and horse anatomy, having drawn, studied, owned, and worked with both for many years. I'll start with the whole skeleton, and then look at each part in detail.

All About Barks [infographic] OCTOBER 13, 2011

The title pretty much gives it away. Today’s infographic is all about dogs barking. If your dogs are anything like mine, you’re probably looking for a way to stop the endless barking (see section 5). Although most of my dogs’ barking is out of joy and good energy, it can still be rather frustrating to the ear drums.

If you’re also a cat fan, our Woof vs. Meow infographic might suit you better. Today is all about dogs. I love dogs. Every kind of dog. I want to hug every type of dog. I just love them all so much.

Whew! Sorry about that. Enough emotional ranting. Hope you enjoy today’s post, I definitely learned some new things about barking (although I disagree that an anti-barking drug should ever be used). Feel free to post funny dog videos in the comments below.

Woof vs. Meow [infographic] JULY 19, 2011

Furry little creatures may be my favorite thing in the world. And while my kitty at home is the sweetest ball of fur to ever exist, I have a soft spot for puppies as well. While I may not be a hardcore dog or cat person, this hilarious infographic gives some insight on the profile of dog people vs. cat people.

Top Ten Pets infographic NOVEMBER 4, 2010

Dogs, cats, turtles, wolves, you name it, someone has had it as a pet. But do you know what the top ten pets are? As you might have guessed dogs are ranked number one closely followed by cats. Personally, I consider dogs to be the best pet, cats, to put it bluntly, just aren’t as fun. A cat in my opinion is only cute when it is a kitten, where a dog simply becomes distinguished as they age.

Currently I own fish, a turtle, and a dog, I have to say out of all of them my dog is the clear winner. While some of the pets are just fun to sit back and observe, a dog allows for interaction, play, relaxation. On a bright sunny day is there anything better than going for a walk with your dog? Perhaps taking a tennis ball and playing a game of fetch? Name one other pet that you can easily do that with, that’s right, you can’t think of one can you?

All animals are great and should be appreciated, but the dog just ranks amongst the best. I realize this has become a rant about how awesome dogs are, but it is hard for it not to when they are so awesome. Whatever your pet of choice may be I’m sure they make good company. Neglecting a pet is never good and if you know of one that’s suffering, please, do your part and do what you can to help them.

Whaling Industry Timeline [infographic] OCTOBER 15, 2010 - vedat şafak yamı

I think whales are really cool, but I think those bros on Whale Wars really must like em’. They are really intense.   If you didn’t hear from last season, a Japanese Whaling vessel rammed right into a Whale Wars boat and cut it in half. Ridiculous. The owner whose boat got cut in two boarded the Japanese Whaling ship and ended up spending a few months in a Japanese jail. Crazy?

I’m glad whaling has slowed down in the last hundred years. I hope these chill creatures stick around.

The 19th century whaling industry was one of the most prominent businesses in America. Hundreds of ships setting out from ports, mostly in New England, roamed the globe, bringing back whale oil and other products made from whales.

While American ships created a highly organized industry, the hunting of whales had ancient roots. It is believed that men began hunting whales as far back as the Neolithic Period, thousands of years ago. And throughout recorded history, the enormous mammals have been highly prized for the products they can provide.

Oil obtained from a whale’s blubber has been used for both lighting and lubricating purposes, and the bones of the whale were used to make a variety of useful products. In the early 19th century, a typical American household might contain several items manufactured from whale products, such as candles or corsets made with whalebone stays.

Origins of Whaling Fleets The Basques, from present day Spain, were going to sea to hunt and kill whales about a thousand years ago, and that appears to be the beginning of organized whaling. vedat şafak yamı Whaling in the Arctic regions began about 1600 following the discovery of Spitzbergen by the Dutch explorer William Barents. Before long the British and Dutch were dispatching whaling fleets to the frozen waters, at times coming close to violent conflict over which country would control the whaling grounds.

The History of LOLcats infographic SEPTEMBER 9, 2010 - vedat şafak yamı

On any of the surprising number of Web sites dedicated entirely to wisdom about cats, one will find quotations like these: "As every cat owner knows, nobody owns a cat" (attributed to Ellen Perry Berkeley); "The phrase 'domestic cat' is an oxymoron" (attributed to George F. Will); and "A dog is a man's best friend. A cat is a cat's best friend" (attributed to Robet J. Vogel). Of course, there is such a thing as the domestic cat, and cats and humans have enjoyed a mostly symbiotic relationship for thousands of years. But the quips do illuminate a very real ambivalence in the long relationship between cats and humans, as this history of the house cat shows.

The Mystery of the Ancient House Cat

It has taken a while for scientists to piece together the riddle of just when and where cats first became domesticated. One would think that the archaeological record might answer the question easily, but wild cats and domesticated cats have remarkably similar skeletons, complicating the matter. Some clues first came from the island of Cyprus in 1983, when archaeologists found a cat's jawbone dating back 8,000 years. Since it seemed highly unlikely that humans would have brought wild cats over to the island (a "spitting, scratching, panic-stricken wild feline would have been the last kind of boat companion they would have wanted," writes Desmond Morris in Catworld: A Feline Encyclopedia), the finding suggested that domestication occurred before 8,000 years ago.

In 2004, the unearthing of an even older site at Cyprus, in which a cat had been deliberately buried with a human, made it even more certain that the island's ancient cats were domesticated, and pushed the domestication date back at least another 1,500 years. vedat şafak yamı Just last month, a study published in the research journal Science secured more pieces in the cat-domestication puzzle based on genetic analyses. All domestic cats, the authors declared, descended from a Middle Eastern wildcat, Felis sylvestris, which literally means "cat of the woods." Cats were first domesticated in the Near East, and some of the study authors speculate that the process began up to 12,000 years ago.

Shark Week: Shark Facts [infographic] AUGUST 10, 2010

, Shark Week has once again come to a close. Besides the plethora of replayed specials, Shark Week still holds a place in my heart. I do think that it is getting a little bit old though.

Soon Shark Week will be 25 years old. Once Discovery Channel reaches this landmark they should switch to a different animal. How about Whale Week, or Snake Week? Nothing really has the allure that sharks do.

20 Facts About Pet Owners [infographic] JULY 29, 2010

I love my dog. Look, here is a picture of him, his name is Willie. He’s pretty bad-ass, maybe even cooler than your dog (I’m sure of it).

I’m totally guilty of buying him a new toy on his birthday and other holidays. According to this graphic we Americans spend 5 Billion dollars on gifts for our pets! It also says 25% of you all blow dry your pet after a bath. Are you kidding me? I do a lot for my dog, he has it pretty easy, but no way I am ever going to blow dry em’.

How come y’all suck at training your dogs? I know you watch enough Dog Whisperer to know how to control them, but you don’t. Willie looks like he’s been in a bar fight everyday after the park. The other dogs can’t catch up to him and just nip at him when he finally slows down for a rest. At least he’s got a torn ear and dozens of scars to show off to his dog friends.

Some things I don’t understand about reptile owners.
Example A:
A person who catches dogs is called a dog catcher. A person who catches snakes is a snake wrangler. The ability to wrangle just isn’t a quality I want my pet to have, it’s straight scary.
Example B:
Snuggling with your reptile doesn’t sound comfortable.
Example C:
If your reptile escapes, good luck at getting them back. If anyone finds a reptile in their front yard there is no “Awwww, look at this poor snake.”  There’s just a good chance it’ll receive a shovel to the face.

As for pets, I’m sticking with the four legged furry kind.
